Uptown in the News
August 24, 2003
Upset over a lack of affordable housing at new developments in Uptown, a school bus full of activists and residents protested at three sites in that neighborhood Saturday afternoon. The Organization of the Northeast's "We Can't Afford Your Homes Tour" aimed to pressure the project's developer to consider building cheaper units. But Charles Huzenis, president of Jameson Realty Group, said city zoning codes are to blame for the lack of affordable homes because they only allow his company to build a scant number of units. That means the company must build larger, more expensive homes to make its Uptown developments work financially, Huzenis said. Jameson has included affordable units in its developments in the more dense West Loop, he said. |
