Uptown's Block ClubsUptown residents are served by a rich network of block clubs. The organizations differ by size and frequency of meetings, but are similar in goals and objectives. They exist as forums where residents come together to address proposed developments and public safety, and also to socialize. Listed below are general boundaries for Uptown's block clubs and the typical activities and concerns of each. Links are provided if a block club has developed a website. If there is no website and you desire to contact a club, please email the UCC and we will forward your request to the club's president. The block clubs are listed geographically, from north to south. for twenty years. Meets monthly on the first Tuesday at Methodist
Home. Active with CAPS. Concerned with development issues.
Sponsors an annual garden walk and occasional garden talks.

Seeking effective way to deal with homeless in the lakefront parks. Working in conjunction with the Chicago Park District's Margate Park Advisory Council on construction of a large playground south of the fieldhouse. Magnolia-Malden Block ClubBoundaries: Malden to Broadway, between Lawrence and Wilson Organization Information: Active organization
for 20 years. Meets on an as-needed basis. Active with CAPS.
Organizes a springtime "clean and green," a summertime barbeque,
and the annual Sheridan Park yard sale. Concerned with public
safety issues. Particular concerns are the Sylvia Center on
Racine; public drinking; and gang activity. Provided community
input on a proposed social services development at the corner
of Wilson and Magnolia, which was effectively blocked. Also
concerned with historic preservation and future development
plans for vacant tract in the 4600 block of Malden. Graceland Wilson Neighbors' AssociationBoundaries: Malden to Broadway, between Wilson and Montrose Organization Information: Active organization
for three years. Meets on an as-needed basis. Active with
CAPS. Raised funds and helped create memorial garden at Uptown's
firehouse at Wilson and Racine. Truman Square Homeowners' AssociationBoundaries: Lawrence to Wilson, between Broadway and Sheridan Organization Information: Active organization
for 15 years, first as block club and more recently as homeowners'
association. Meets as needed, when there is an important issue
to consider. Active with CAPS. Monitors local playlot, including
opening and locking of fence, maintenance and beautification,
and prevention of loitering by adults and gang members. Lake Side Area Neighbors' AssociationBoundaries: Lawrence to Eastwood, between Sheridan and Clarendon Organization Information: Active organization
for 15 years. Meets monthly on the third Sunday morning at
Lawrence House. Active with CAPS. Holds annual summer picnic
and winter holiday party. Beautification efforts include planters
throughout area and fall wreaths and ribbons. Deals with many
local development issues and various social services agencies
and their clients. Seeking effective way to deal with homeless
in the lakefront parks. Concerned about appropriate re-use
of vacant buildings on Clarendon, between Lakeside and Leland,
which were to house an assisted-living facility for Alzheimer's
patients and are now being considered for TIF designation.
Clarendon Park NeighborsBoundaries: Wilson to Montrose, between Broadway and Lake Shore Drive Organization Information: Formed in fall, 2003.
Organization is in its formative stage. Active with CAPS.
As organization evolves, will become active in matters concerning
the Chicago Park District's Clarendon Park. Buena Park NeighborsBoundaries: Montrose Avenue to the north, Irving Park Road to the south, and east from Graceland Cemetery to Lake Michigan Organization Information: Active organization
for 8 years. Largest geographic area and membership of any
Uptown block club. Active with CAPS. Association is composed
of five sub-committees: Business Development; Zoning; Membership;
Beautification; and Safety/CAPS. Sponsors Safe Halloween activities,
holiday season Adopt-A-Family and an annual, summer block
party. Deals with many local development issues. Attempts
to attract targeted businesses to open locations in area.
Website has loyal readership, especially the bulletin board
postings, where much news and opinions are shared. North Uptown Neighbors Association (NUNA)Boundaries: Lawrence to Argyle, Clark to Broadway Organization Information: A new block club, meeting
on a bi-monthly basis. Hosts to a Summer Block Club party and
Gardening Club. Focus is on issues of safety, zoning, development,
and other quality of life issues.
