Chicago does not lack for terrific working bands, but one of them deserves a great deal more recognition than it gets. Indeed, if there were any doubt that the aptly named Deep Blue Organ Trio ranks among the best small units in the city, it was obliterated over the weekend at the Green Mill Jazz Club. For whether these musicians were backing their dynamic guest soloist or simply riffing cogently against one another, they produced some of the most soulful, sublimely understated jazz improvisation since the heyday of the organ trio in the '50s and '60s.
