A woman was killed and 10 people were injured, including three firefighters, when fire broke out in a large apartment building on the North Side on Wednesday in the 4500 block of North Malden in Uptown. About 120 firefighters battled the fire for 1-1/2 hours. They rescued 10 people using ground and aerial ladders, and many other tenants were escorted down stairwells by firefighters. The building was heavily damaged. Firefighters believe the fire broke out in a second-floor apartment. An unidentified woman was found in a hallway near the apartment and later pronounced dead.
