Uptown in the News
September 6-12 Issue
Though the sign outside Uptown’s newest bar and grill gets the vintage, ‘40s-ish feeling just right, you might want to keep your zoot suit at home: Inside, Rihana is singing about um-ber-ellas and martinis are made with pomegranate juice. Skip the Reuben bites and goat cheese appetizer (the goat cheese, which claims to be seasoned with harissa, is particularly disappointing). Instead head straight for the braised pork belly Cuban sandwich the rich meat mingling with vinegary pickles to great success, or chicken fried steak, which arrives topped with a thick gravy that’s hard to stop eating (even though it’s clear that if you don’t stop soon, it’s going to kill you). 4840 N. Broadway at Gunnison St. (773-506-3100). El: Red to Lawrence. Bus: 22 (24 hrs), 36, 81 (24 hrs), 151 (24 hrs) Lunch (sat, Sun), dinner. Average main course: $10. |
